American motion-picture actor, born in Syracuse, New York. He appeared in a succession of motion pictures in the early 1980s that focused on adolescent characters, including Risky Business (1983), which launched him to stardom. His subsequent acting roles include those in Legend (1985), The Color of Money (1986), Top Gun (1986), Rain Man (1988), Born on the Fourth of July (1989), A Few Good Men (1992), The Firm (1993), and Interview with the Vampire (1994).
