Storm blankets Midwest, grounds planes
The snowy debris of a collapsed roof in an Illinois nursing home offered just one snapshot of the wintry mayhem left in the path of the season's first big storm. The storm was blamed for at least five traffic deaths as it cut a swath from Texas to Michigan before moving Saturday into the Northeast. Its powerful winds caused three deaths and at least two have died shoveling heavy snow.

Midwest storm causes major power outages
The season's first big wintry storm blustered across the Midwest on Friday and closed in on the Northeast, leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity, stranding airline passengers and burying streets in wet, heavy snow.

Much of nation braces for heat wave
The famed necklace lights lining the city's East River bridges will remain off to save power as the city braces for potentially record breaking heat -- one of many conservation tactics across the country during soaring temperatures from the Midwest to the Northeast.
